2 thousand electric buses will run soon in Kolkata!

Vehicles running on the roads contribute a lot to air pollution, due to which it becomes difficult for the common man to breathe in big cities. The government of West Bengal has taken a step to include 2000 electric buses in the transport system to curb vehicular pollution. Apart from this, the government is also planning to convert 3000 diesel-run buses to CNG, which will be completed in the next few years. State Transport Minister Firhad Hakim gave this information.

The minister informed that currently 80 electric buses are plying on the roads in Kolkata. 30 diesel operated buses have been converted to CNG operated buses and the results are very encouraging.

“We are planning to induct 2000 electric buses in the existing fleet within the next 3-4 years. At present, the manufacturing of such green buses is limited due to lack of supply of lithium batteries.” Hakim said

The main objective of this State Transport Plan is to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Due to the decrease in the use of which the pollution level in the city will also decrease and the air quality will also be better. When asked how many charging stations are there in the city for this, he told about 76 such charging facilities.

Earlier, Hakim had also commented about this through a tweet. He said that the urban transport system would soon become completely electric and old buses would be converted to CNG, the work of which was going on in full swing. We are committed to reduce our carbon footprint and I appeal to all citizens to participate in this fight for a better future for the generations to come.

Talking about increasing the use of CNG, he said that CNG is a low cost fuel and is also not harmful to the environment. He informed that the department is working on converting 3,000 diesel buses to CNG buses which will be completed in a phased manner.

In order to increase the adoption rate of electric vehicles, the state government has waived the registration fee on them, apart from this many types of taxes have also been exempted. The minister said this during an event organized by EngIO, a civil society organization in association with Prabha Khaitan Foundation, on the occasion of World Environment Day.
