new Delhi. Even though the Australian cricket team is currently on a tour of Pakistan, many questions will still be arising in its mind regarding security. In fact, exactly 13 years ago today, i.e. on March 3, 2009, the terrorist attack on the bus of the Sri Lankan cricket team (Sri Lanka vs Pakistan) which went on a tour of Pakistan shook the whole world. This was the moment which is not easy to forget for any cricket fan. After this deadly attack, international cricket came to a halt in Pakistan for many years.
The terrorists carried out this incident when the Sri Lankan team was going by bus to play a match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. After this, the terrorists started firing indiscriminately on the Sri Lankan cricket team bus at the roundabout near the stadium. The attackers also attacked the team bus with rocket launchers and grenades. But this target was missed. If the target was accurate, then it was difficult for the players to escape. The players survived in this attack, but the security personnel lost their lives.
Players saved their lives like this
On hearing the sound of bullets, all the players sitting in the bus bowed under the seat. The windows of the bus were breaking due to the hail of bullets. Appreciation has to be given to those security personnel, who fired back and took the bus inside the stadium without stopping. The match was immediately canceled after this incident.
These players were injured
In this terrorist attack, the then captain of the Sri Lankan team, Mahela Jayawardene, vice-captain Kumar Sangakkara, Thilan Samaraweera, including 6 big players suffered serious injuries. Batsman Tharanga Paranavithana suffered a chest injury while Thilan Samaraweera was hit in the leg.
Sri Lankan players airlifted to airport
After this deadly attack, Sri Lankan players were airlifted from Gaddafi Stadium to the airport by Pakistan Army helicopter. After which the Sri Lankan players left for home. After that all the teams of the world did not tour Pakistan for many years. Australia’s team has gone on a tour of Pakistan after almost 24 years. 5 years ago Australia refused to tour Pakistan after the suicide attack on the church in Lahore.
Pakistan has recently hosted Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh and South Africa. Last year, New Zealand and England canceled the tour of Pakistan for the limited overs series due to security reasons. New Zealand had canceled the tour just before the toss of the first ODI to be played in Rawalpindi.
