Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan feels that his bowlers failed to execute their plans and bowled too short to aggressive batsmen like Tom Latham. Taking advantage of this, Latham (145 not out) made the team win by scoring the best ODI score of his career on Friday.
Latham scored an unbeaten 145 off 104 balls and shared an unbroken 221-run partnership for the fourth wicket with captain Kane Williamson (94 not out off 98 balls) to dwarf India’s score of 306 for seven. New Zealand won the match with 17 balls to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The second match of the series will be played in Hamilton on Sunday.
Dhawan said at the award ceremony after the match, “We were feeling good with our score. In the first 15 overs, the fast bowlers were swinging the ball. This ground is different from other grounds. We bowled more ‘short of length’ balls today which made it easier for Latham to play the big shots. We also spoiled the fielding.
He said, “Latham took advantage of our shot bowling and took the match away from us. He turned the match in his favor by hitting four boundaries (five) in 40 overs. We were in the match before this over.
New Zealand captain Williamson said that Latham played a special innings at Eden Park. This ground is square, in such a situation any target could be achieved. “It was a competitive goal. If you have a good partnership at Eden Park, you can get any target. Latham played an amazing innings. This is one of the best innings I have seen in ODIs.
He said, “Spin played a big role in this match, the fast bowlers also did a great job. We put pressure on them. It was good to contribute with the bat. Man of the match Latham said it was one of those days when everything goes well for you.
Along with defeating India, the Kiwi team also hit the record books, Kane Williamson and Tom Latham in the first ODI
He said, “It has been one of those days when everything goes your way. Finally having some fun. Nice to hit the ball away from the fielders and run fast. I think our preparation was good. He said, “Washington Sundar’s ball was taking turn.” It is a small ground, so by building a partnership, you can take advantage in the last over.
