Bhubaneswar. The Indian men’s team suffered a 2-3 defeat at the hands of Spain in their second match of the FIH Pro Hockey League here on Sunday. Eduard de Ignacio Simo (16th minute) and Marc Miralles (26th minute) gave Spain a 2-0 lead but India equalized through goals from captain Harmanpreet Singh (30th minute) and Abhishek (54th minute).
The Indian defense line, however, disintegrated in the last moments, which Spain took advantage of. From his side, Mark Rene scored a goal in the 56th minute, which proved to be decisive in the end.
Let us tell you that India had finished third in the last FIH Pro League season, the Indian forward team could not be completely successful in penetrating the Spanish defence. Spain took the lead after a goalless first quarter. Experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh failed a Spanish penalty corner but could not clear the ball away from his danger zone. Eduard de Ignacio-Simo took advantage of this and scored.
After trailing the team scored two goals but could not save the defeat
Spain added to India’s woes when Marc Miralles’ drive from the penalty corner proved too good for Sreejesh. After trailing by two goals, the Indian team showed pace in the game and captain Harmanpreet Singh’s goal reduced the gap a bit. After a goalless third quarter, India showed a goal in the final quarter and also scored the team’s second goal. However, Ryan helped Spain take the lead with his strike just four minutes from the final hooter.
India’s next match will be against New Zealand on 4 November. Earlier in the match, the Indian team had registered a 4-3 victory over New Zealand on Friday.
