Gandhinagar. Army pole vaulter Shiva Subramaniam won the gold medal at the 36th National Games here on Monday by bettering his own national record set four years ago with a jump of over 5.31 metres. Sambo Lapung, another Army player, set a new national record in men’s weightlifting in the 96 kg category. However, Lapung is representing Arunachal Pradesh in these games. He created a national record by lifting 198 kg in clean and jerk.
Shiva broke the National Games record of 5.10m set by Vijay Pal Singh in 1987 with the first jump of 5.11m in the event held at the IIT campus here. He then jumped over 5.21m and then attempted a jump of 5.31m. He was successful in crossing this hurdle after failing the first time.

In swimming, SP Likhit put two gold medals in the army’s bag. He also topped the 4x100m medley relay after winning gold in the 200m breaststroke at the Sardar Patel Swimming Pool Complex in Rajkot. Hritika Sriram (Maharashtra) won her first gold medal of the season and ninth overall at the National Games. She won the yellow medal in the women’s 3m springboard diving event with a score of 179.15.

Kirpal Singh of Punjab set a new record in the discus throw in the National Games. He broke the 25-year-old record of Shakti Singh (58.56m) with a distance of 59.32m. In this event, Army’s Gagandeep Singh and Prashant Malik won silver and bronze medals respectively. In shooting, Punjab’s Sift Kaur Kamra defeated Odisha’s Shriyanka Sarangi to win the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions title.
In archery, in the men’s recurve semi-finals, Atanu Das (West Bengal) defeated Tarundeep Rai (Army) 6-0. Atanu will take on another army archer Gurcharan Besra in the final. Former India captain Rani Rampal scored a hat-trick in women’s hockey as Haryana beat Odisha 4-0 in a Group A match. In Group B, Karnataka came back after trailing and held Jharkhand to a 3-3 draw.
