New Delhi. The dispute over the hosting of the Asia Cup was resolved as soon as another earthquake occurred in Pakistan cricket. The current chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Najam Sethi raised the political temperature in a tweet on Tuesday. Sethi has announced his withdrawal from the candidature for the post of PCB chairman. He said that he does not want to cause any dispute between Pakistan People’s Party President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
The PCB chairman insisted that the instability and uncertainty created by internal squabbles would not be beneficial for the PCB. He wrote in the tweet, “Salam to all! I do not want to be the reason for the dispute between Asif Ali Zardari and Shahbaz Sharif. This kind of instability and uncertainty is not good for the Pakistan Cricket Board. In these circumstances, I am not a candidate for the post of PCB chairman. Best wishes to all the stakeholders.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, after pulling himself out of the race to become the next board chairman, Najam Sethi has virtually quit as PCB chief.
Who can replace Najam Sethi?
According to Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ehsan ur Rehman Mazari, Zaka Ashraf, who supports the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), may take over as the PCB chairman. According to Mazari, Najam Sethi was made the chairman temporarily at the request of PCB patron and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to oversee the elections and restore the 2014 constitution.
The PCB’s new management committee was initially given 120 days to complete the task of restoring the 2014 constitution, with the aim of reviving departmental cricket. However, Najam Sethi and his committee were given an extension of 4 weeks, which is ending on 20 June.
Mazari insisted that the tenure of the management committee headed by Najam Sethi would not be extended. This means that Zaka Ashraf will soon take over as the PCB chairman. According to sources, the senior leadership of the party wants Ashraf, who headed the PCB during the previous PPP administration, to take over the responsibility once again.
