Will play Rohit Sharma on West Indies tour and will also captain the Test team
New Delhi. A series of 2 Tests will be played between India and West Indies in July. Rohit Sharma will also be available for selection for this Test series. Earlier there were media reports that Rohit would be rested for this Test series and someone else would take charge of his team. However, a BCCI official has denied this. But, the bad news is that KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer will be unavailable for this Test series. Because he has not been able to recover from the injury till now.
At the same time, Cheteshwar Pujara has been successful in saving his place. But despite the presence of Pujara, the selectors would like to include a player like Sarfaraz Khan in the team for the 2-Test series. Sarfaraz Khan scored a ton of runs in the Ranji Trophy. But, he has not got the chance till now.
Only Rohit will captain on West Indies tour
A senior BCCI official told InsideSport, “Rohit is fit and available for selection in the West Indies series. He got a good break after the final of the World Test Championship. So there is no such thing as workload management. He will captain the Indian team during the Test series against the West Indies.
Rohit’s recent form raised concerns
Earlier speculations were being made about Rohit Sharma that he could take a break from Test cricket. His poor form has been a major point of concern. But the World Cup is only a few months away. In such a situation, he can regain his lost form through the West Indies series. Despite failing in IPL and WTC Final, Rohit’s statistics say something else. In ODIs, his average in the last 12 months has been 49.27. He has scored one century and four half-centuries in 13 innings. His average in Tests was definitely 37.5 in 5 matches. In such a situation, it would be a bit premature to criticize him.
Half of Team India will be ‘old’ by the next WTC final, does BCCI have a plan for change?
The BCCI official further said, “It is true that Rohit Sharma did not score runs in IPL and WTC Final. But, in the last few months, he did not do very bad batting. He scored a century in the Nagpur Test against Australia. He is focusing on his fitness. It is wrong to criticize his recent form.
Meanwhile, it has come to light that the selection committee for the West Indies tour will pick the team next week. The Indian team will leave in the first week of July.
