BCCI to hike selectors’ salaries to woo veterans like Sehwag?
Indian veterans often shy away from applying for the post of national selector

New Delhi. The big names of the Indian team have often been seen shying away from applying for the post of national selector. Experts believe that even those who want to become, they do not think seriously after seeing the salary they get for this post. Actually, the salary of the coach here is very normal. BCCI will not get any big name in place of Chetan Sharma from North Zone until the salary is increased. Sharma had to lose his post after a sting operation in February. In this sting, he was seen talking about confidential information regarding Indian players and team selection. Former India opener Shivsunder Das replaced Sharma as chairman while S Sharath (South), Subroto Banerjee (Central) and Salil Ankola (West) are in the selection committee.

The chairman of the senior selection committee gets Rs 1 crore per annum while four other members get Rs 90 lakh per annum. The last time a senior cricketer was the chairman of the selection committee was Dilip Vengsarkar (2006 to 2008) and Krishnamachari Srikkanth (2008 to 2012). Vengsarkar’s work was unpaid while the BCCI started paying salaries after Srikkanth became a selector. Mohinder Amarnath was also in the selection committee and Sandeep Patil was also its chairman. At this time only one big name emerges for inclusion in the selection committee from North Zone and that is Virender Sehwag.

A BCCI official said, “During the tenure of the Committee of Administrators, Viru was asked to apply for the post of head coach, which later became Anil Kumble. Now don’t think he will apply by himself. Apart from this, a big player like him will also have to be paid according to his stature.

Other veteran players from the North Zone are either associated with broadcast channels or with IPL teams. Some have academies and some write columns. Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh are also from North Zone but they do not meet the criteria of completing five years of retirement from cricket. Former India spinner Maninder Singh has applied twice. The first time he was called for the interview but not the second time. (with language input)
