Team India has been announced for the two-match home test series against New Zealand. Ajinkya Rahane has been handed over the reins of the team in the first Test to be played in Kanpur from November 25. Rahane’s bat has been silent for a long time and this is the reason why cricket pundits are quite surprised when he is made the captain. Former India opener Aakash Chopra has also raised questions on Rahane being given the captaincy in the first Test. Akash says that Rahane’s recent form is very poor and there will be a lot of pressure on him considering that.
Talking on his YouTube channel, Akash said, ‘You have selected Ajinkya Rahane as the captain. But to be honest, if the last Test match against England was played, there was a question on whether Rahane would have been in the team or not. I like Ajinkya Rahane but the fact is that his average has been falling for some time now. There have been a few good innings in between, but the average has dropped by 20 points in the last two years. If he had not played a partnership with Pujara in the second innings of Lord’s, then the discussion of finding a replacement for him would have intensified. Had Rohit Sharma been the vice-captain and Ajinkya might have been put on notice. But, at this point Rahane has been made the captain.
Akash said that this series will be very important for Rahane. He said, ‘It will be a very important series for Rahane. He is definitely the captain in the series, but he has to score runs because there is pressure on him. In the last one year, Rahane has not been performing up to his name and his game has been quite mediocre. The first match of the Test series is to be played in Kanpur from November 25, while the second Test match will be played in Mumbai from December 3.
