The International Cricket Council (ICC) today (Monday 13 June) announced that Sri Lankan batting star Angelo Mathews and Pakistan’s spin sensation Tuba Hasan have been selected as the ICC Men’s and Women’s Players for May 2022. Mathews has surpassed compatriot Asitha Fernando and Bangladeshi Mushfiqur Rahim to win the award, while Tuba Hasan has surpassed his captain Bismah Maroof and Trinity Smith of the jersey.
Right-handed batsman Angelo Mathews, one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced players, has been named the ICC Player of the Month (May 2022) for scoring runs during his team’s impressive ICC World Test Championship series win against Bangladesh. Scored 344 runs in two test matches at an average of 172. He played a powerful innings of 199 runs in the drawn match at Chittagong and 145 not out in Mirpur.
The ICC Player of the Month was started in January 2021 and since then this is the first time that a Sri Lankan player has won this award. On being named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month, Mathews said, “I am honored and happy to be named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. I would like to congratulate Asitha Fernando and Mushfiqur Rahim for their stellar performances, who went on to win the award.”
Pakistan’s Tuba Hasan had significant success with the ball during her first international series. Because of this, she was nominated for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month. The 21-year-old leg-spinner took five wickets against Sri Lanka in the three-match T20I series in Pakistan. She was also the Player of the Series in the series. In the first match, Tuba created a sensation by taking three wickets in his name.
