New Delhi. Arjun Tendulkar has followed in his father’s footsteps and scored a century in his first Ranji Trophy match. Arjun made his Ranji debut for Goa at the age of 23 and scored a brilliant 120 against Rajasthan. Sachin Tendulkar started his journey of becoming a great cricketer 34 years ago at the age of 15 by scoring an unbeaten 100 against Gujarat at the Wankhede Stadium, but Arjun Tendulkar does not know about this most special record of his father.
Arjun Tendulkar spoke to reporters after scoring a century in his debut match. During this, when he was asked whether he knew that his father had also scored a century on first class debut? To this Arjun immediately replied, “No, I did not know.” It was not easy for Arjun to score a century in difficult conditions, but the left-handed batsman played the role of night watchman well and stayed till the stumps.
Arjun said, “When I came to bat for the first time, I faced most of the balls, because Suyash was batting at 80 at that time, so my job was to save him and play most of the balls.” After this, the opening session of the second day of the match was all about “giving the bowlers the first hour”.
Arjun said, “According to the game of the second day, just give the first hour to the bowlers. After finishing the preliminary phase it is now time to dominate and score more runs. As I said it was the new ball and the new ball will do anything. To be honest, I don’t care how I look, I got through the first tough phase and then reaped the benefits.”
Arjun Tendulkar has always grabbed most headlines as a bowler and his prowess with the bat has not gone unnoticed. But for a left-handed batsman, he always had faith in his batting abilities. He scored centuries in many trial matches for the Mumbai Cricket Association. Arjun said, “I always believed in my ability and just wanted to be set, and once I am set it is all about taking advantage and scoring big runs. As I said just play the first hour and reap the benefits.
Arjun has had a good start in the first-class circuit, but the youngster is not keen on looking too far ahead. He wants to stay in the present and focus on winning the ongoing match against Rajasthan. Arjun said, “Just play every game and every ball on merit. For now, just trying to win this game.”
Please tell that due to more opportunities to play, Junior Tendulkar had decided to leave Mumbai and play in Goa at the beginning of this season. Batting at number seven, Arjun shared a 221-run partnership for the sixth wicket to take the team to a score of 493 for eight at stumps. Arjun emulated his father by scoring a century in 177 balls. Arjun has taken eight wickets in eight List A matches. He took four wickets in three T20 matches for Goa in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Arjun also made it to the Indian Under-19 team and was bought by the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians, but he did not play a single IPL for the team. Matches have not been played.
