Mumbai: BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said on Thursday that the Asia Cup 2022 will be held in the United Arab Emirates, which was earlier scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka. “The Asia Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) because this is the only place where it is not raining,” Ganguly told reporters after the board’s apex council meeting here.
Sri Lanka Cricket on Wednesday informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that the board would not be in a position to host the upcoming T20 edition of the Asia Cup due to the economic and political crisis in the country. Sri Lanka Cricket had also recently postponed the third phase of the Lanka Premier League due to the current crisis. The Asia Cup (T20) will be held from August 27 to September 11.
Earlier, an ACC source said, “Sri Lanka Cricket has informed that due to the current political and economic situation in their country, especially when it comes to foreign exchange, it is for them to host this big six-team tournament in the country.” The official said that the SLC officials have informed that they would like to host the tournament in the UAE or any other country.
The official said that the Asia Cup is scheduled to be held in August-September ahead of the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia this year and the ACC is likely to make an announcement in the next few days.
