Shastri is unlikely to be replaced by a foreign coach and a top BCCI source has revealed that only a former India player will become Team India’s next coach. The names of many including Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman are being discussed in this race. But there is no official announcement yet. However, sources have ruled out the possibility of Kumble being in the fray for the post. Seven out of eight teams in the IPL have foreign coaches. Only Punjab Kings have an Indian coach in Kumble.

A BCCI source said during a conversation with Hindustan Times, ‘The new coach will be an Indian. Unlike IPL, Team India’s coaching is for a year. Management works well with an Indian coach. We have spoken to the main players. Their suggestions are not binding on us. But again there is no justification for any disturbance in the dressing room.
The successful overseas coaches of IPL, Ricky Ponting of Australia and Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka are not keen on becoming the coach of Team India. Ponting is the coach of Delhi while Jayawardene is the coach of Mumbai. So far, four foreign coaches – John Wright, Greg Chappell, Gary Kirsten and Duncan Fletcher have been the coach of Team India. However, Grape Chappell’s two-year tenure was mired in controversy. Due to this the team was soon out of the 2007 ODI World Cup. After this, during the tenure of Kirsten, the team won two big titles under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
BCCI can now invite applications for a new coach soon. Prior to this, the board is also holding informal talks with potential people. It includes legends like VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan and they have IPL experience. These three major names can be considered. The board is also in touch with NCA director Rahul Dravid, who does not want to be a coach himself.
