New Delhi. Team India coach Ravi Shastri’s tenure is ending after the T20 World Cup. Shastri himself does not want to extend his tenure. The BCCI is soon going to invite applications for a new coach. But the responsibility will be given to an Indian as the new coach, the foreigner will not be made the coach of Team India. This has become clear. Under Shastri’s coaching, Team India has performed amazingly abroad, but the team has not won a single ICC trophy so far. Former world champion players Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan are in the race to become the new coach.
Talking about IPL, the coaches of 7 out of 8 teams are foreign. Only the responsibility of Punjab Kings is with former Indian captain Anil Kumble. Speaking to Hindustan Times, a BCCI source said, “The new coach will be an Indian. Unlike IPL, Team India’s coaching job is for a year. Management works well with an Indian coach. The successful overseas coaches of IPL, Ricky Ponting of Australia and Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka are not keen on becoming the coach of Team India. Ponting is the coach of Delhi while Jayawardene is the coach of Mumbai.
Greg Chappell’s tenure was full of controversy
Talking about the foreign coach of Team India, so far John Wright, Greg Chappell, Gary Kirsten and Duncan Fletcher have got this responsibility. Although the two-year tenure of the Grape Chapel was in a lot of controversies. Due to this the team was soon out of the 2007 ODI World Cup. After this, during the tenure of Kirsten, the team won 2 big titles under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Plechter’s tenure was also satisfactory.
Kumble will not return
Anil Kumble has been the coach of Team India in 2016-17. After the dispute with Virat Kohli, Ravi Shastri has been given this responsibility by removing him. In such a situation, there will be no return of Kumble as a coach again. “We have spoken to the main players. Their suggestions are not binding on us. But again there is no justification for any disturbance in the dressing room. His IPL record is also not good.
Laxman and Dravid also in race
BCCI may soon invite applications for the new coach. The board is also talking informally with potential people before this. VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer have IPL experience. These three major names can be considered. The board is also in touch with NCA director Rahul Dravid, who does not want to be a coach himself.
