Selected in the World Cup team at the age of 18, but could not play
The young player suffered a big loss due to Rahul Dravid
New Delhi. Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut at the age of just 16 and became the shining star of Indian cricket. It is not that only Sachin entered international cricket at a young age. Many other Indian players also made their debut around Sachin. But, his career did not last as long as Sachin Tendulkar. One such player was Parthiv Patel, who made his Test debut for India at 17 years 152 days.
Parthiv’s name still holds the record of being the youngest wicketkeeper to make a test debut for India. His Test career lasted 16 years. But, during this he got a chance to play only 25 Tests. At the same time, Parthiv was able to play only 38 ODIs and 2 T20s.
Parthiv played under-15, under-17 age group cricket for India. After this, he got a chance to make his Test debut in Team India. He made his debut in the Nottingham Test in 2022 against England. Parthiv got a place in Team India because of his attacking batting more than wicketkeeping. Dinesh Karthik and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were also emerging in the same period and once Dhoni confirmed his place in the team? Parthiv, Dinesh everyone left.
Parthiv was born during the riots
There is an interesting anecdote related to the birth and debut of Parthiv Patel. He shared this in an interview. Parthiv said, “In 1985, riots broke out in Ahmedabad and curfew was imposed. During that time the mother had labor pain. Father was a corporator, so somehow a police van was arranged and my mother went to the hospital sitting in that van. After this I was born and I returned home sitting in the police van with my mother.
For the debut tour also went to the airport sitting in a police car
In this interview, Parthiv also told an interesting anecdote related to his debut tour. Parthiv was selected in the Indian Test team in 2002 and had to go to England. At the same time, after the Godhra incident, riots broke out all over Gujarat. According to Parthiv, “I returned from Sri Lanka with the India-A team in 2002 and got selected in the Indian Test. Now I had to reach Mumbai and from there we had to go to England. But, due to the riots, the entire Gujarat was closed. At that time also I reached the airport sitting in the police van and was able to catch my flight.
Didn’t get chance in World Cup because of Dravid
Its next year i.e. in the beginning of 2003, Parthiv made his ODI debut against New Zealand and he was selected as a specialist wicketkeeper in the Indian team for the World Cup. But, captain Sourav Ganguly did not give Parthiv Patel a chance to play in a single match and got Rahul Dravid wicketkeeping in the entire tournament. Despite joining the World Cup team at the age of 18, Parthiv did not get a chance to play in the tournament. After this, he could never play the World Cup and his Test career also got derailed.
Stayed out of Team India for a long time
Parthiv was dropped from the Test team in 2004 and returned after 4 years. But, after 1 test, he was dropped from the team again. After this, due to Dhoni’s injury, after 8 years i.e. in 2016, Parthiv made a comeback in the Test team. This time he got to play 3 Tests and he played his last Test for India in 2018. Two years later, in December 2020, Parthiv retired from all formats of cricket. He was seen playing in Legends League Cricket in October last year and was also in the coaching staff of Gujarat Titans team in IPL.
