New Delhi. Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg believes that the 2021 IPL could be Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s last year in the league. Hogg’s statement came after Dhoni was dismissed for 1 run in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders. In this match held 2 days ago, KKR’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy clean bowled the CSK captain. He was out after playing 4 balls. Dhoni’s bat has been silent for the last two IPLs. He scored 200 runs in 14 matches last year and this year has been able to score only 52 runs in 10 matches. Hogg believes that age has started dominating 40-year-old Dhoni.
Hogg said on his YouTube channel that I think he is going to retire from IPL cricket at the end of the year, the way he could not understand Chakraborty’s ball 2 days ago and got bowled. It is telling that age is dominating them. There was a huge gap between his bat and pad. I think 40 years old Dhoni’s reflexes are starting to weaken. However, his wicketkeeping has been superb.
Dhoni is not as fast as before: Hogg
He further said that it is good for Indian cricket and CSK that he is still playing because of his captaincy. He keeps things calm and has been instrumental in developing other young cricketers apart from Jadeja. The way he returned to the pavilion after getting out against Kolkata, it was clearly visible in his body language and eyes that now I have lost the pace.
‘Dhoni can become CSK’s head coach’
Dhoni, who retired from international cricket last year, has been named as Team India’s mentor for the T20 World Cup beginning on October 17. Hogg believes that Dhoni may have said goodbye to international cricket. But his role in CSK will continue. Hogg expects three-time IPL champion Dhoni to play a managerial role with the franchise and oversee the team’s work with Stephen Fleming. He can also become a head coach. With the big auction coming up next year, CSK may go for a complete change and start a new era without Dhoni.
