Commonwealth Games: British land has been liked by Indian players, read how the performance has been here

New Delhi. Indian sportspersons have produced their best performance in the Commonwealth Games whenever they have been held on British soil and they are expected to show their best in the Games starting July 28 in Birmingham, despite the shooting sport not being included. Will set new records. India has so far participated in the Commonwealth Games five times on British soil and has bettered its previous performance every time except in Glasgow 2014.

India participated in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 1934, which were organized in London. India then participated in only two sports athletics and wrestling. Wrestler Rashid Anwar won the bronze medal in 74 kg to give India its first medal in these games. India was successful in winning two gold medals for the first time in the 1958 Games held in Cardiff, Wales. Flying Sikh Milkha Singh and wrestler Leela Ram gave this gold medal to India. Wrestler Laxmi Kant Pandey won the silver medal. Earlier, India could not win any medal in Sydney (1938) and Vancouver (1954).

After this, Commonwealth Games were organized in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1970 in Britain, in which India won 12 medals. These include five gold medals. India had won all its five gold and all three silver medals in wrestling. Then wrestlers Ved Prakash, Sudesh Kumar, Uday Chand, Mukhtiar Singh and Harishchandra Birajdar had won gold medals from India.

The Commonwealth Games were organized in Edinburgh itself in 1986, in which India did not participate. After this, the Commonwealth Games were played on British soil in Manchester in 2002 and India had done its best performance till that time. In Manchester 2002, India was successful in winning a total of 69 medals including 30 gold medals. India then secured the fourth position behind Australia, hosts England and Canada.

India had won 14 gold medals in shooting in Manchester but this sport has not been included in Birmingham 2022, which will harm India the most. In Manchester itself, the Indian women’s hockey team created history by winning the gold medal by defeating England 3-2 in the final. India hosted the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 2010 in New Delhi, winning 101 medals, including 38 gold, but failed to repeat the feat at the Glasgow Games four years later.

In Glasgow 2014, India won 64 medals including 15 gold medals and finished fifth. India had then won five gold medals in wrestling, four in shooting, three in weightlifting and one each in badminton, athletics and squash. The Commonwealth Games are starting in Birmingham from 28 July. In this, a total of 215 players from India will participate in 141 events of 19 sports.
