CWG 2022: Big blow to India before Commonwealth Games 2022, star sprinter fails in dope test


New Delhi. India has suffered a major setback before the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG 2022). Star female sprinter S. Dhanalakshmi has been found positive in the dope test. In such a situation, Dhanalakshmi will no longer be able to participate in the Commonwealth Games. Indian female athlete has been temporarily banned. The 24-year-old Dhanalakshmi recently made headlines by defeating Dutee Chand and Hima Das.

Dhanalakshmi, who hails from Tamil Nadu, won accolades last year by defeating veteran female athlete Dutee Chand in 100 meters and Hima Das in 200 meters last month. Dhanalakshmi has failed in the testing done by the Athlete Integrity Unit (AIU) of World Athletics. AIU had taken Dhanalakshmi’s out-of-competition sample from outside the country.

Anabolic steroids have been found in Dhanalakshmi’s sample. After failing the dope test, Dhanalakshmi has also been barred from participating in the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA. Dhanalakshmi was to participate in the 100 meters and relay events in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

PM encouraged the players
215 athletes from India will participate in the Commonwealth Games. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, shuttler PV Sindhu, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, wrestler Bajrang Punia, boxer Amit Panghal and table tennis player Manika Batra are expected to win gold in the CWG. PM Narendra Modi joined the players through video conferencing on Wednesday and wished them all the best for the Commonwealth Games.
