CWG 2022: Saurav Ghosal won bronze medal in squash, India won medal for the first time in men’s singles


New Delhi. India got a bronze medal in squash on the sixth day of the Commonwealth Games. In the men’s singles bronze medal match, Sourav Ghosal won the bronze medal by defeating England’s James Willstrop in straight sets. In this match, Sourav dominated the host England player from the beginning and he maintained it till the third game. Sourav James’s father has taken coaching from Malcolm. Before this match, James’ record against Sourav was strong. He won 8 matches against the Indian player. But, Ghoshal was outnumbered in the bronze medal match. James won the gold medal in the last Commonwealth Games.

Sourav has created history with this victory. He has become the first Indian to win a medal in the singles event of squash at the Commonwealth Games. He defeated England’s former world champion Willstrop 11-6, 11-1 and 11-4 in a one-sided bronze medal match.

The joy of winning a medal in the singles event for the first time was clearly visible on the face of 35-year-old Sourav. Tears of happiness welled up from his eyes. Sourav defeated New Zealand’s Paul Cole in the semi-finals. Earlier, Sourav had won a silver medal in the mixed doubles event at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. This is his second medal in Commonwealth Games.

India has so far won 15 medals in the Games. This includes 5 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. Right now many players are in the medal race. While many events are left to compete.
