New Delhi. Veteran wicket-keeper batsman and former captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders team Dinesh Karthik played in the 14th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) after taking an injection in the playoffs. Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) secretary S Ramaswamy has made this disclosure. It is believed that Karthik was suffering from a knee injury and due to this he had to take painkiller injections. Due to injury, the right-handed batsman will miss the upcoming season of the Syed Mushtaq T20 Trophy, which begins on November 4.
Karthik was set to lead Tamil Nadu in this domestic tournament but due to his unavailability, Vijay Shankar has now been made the captain of the team. Tamil Nadu will face Maharashtra in the opening match of this T20 tournament. The final of the league is to be played on 24 November.
Ramaswamy told Cricbuzz, ‘Karthik played the IPL playoffs (for Kolkata Knight Riders) after taking the injection. So, we have rested him for the Syed Mushtaq Trophy. In his place, Vijay Shankar will captain the Tamil Nadu team. Karthik, however, did not perform well in IPL-14 while playing for two-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders. He scored a total of 223 runs in 15 innings at an average of 22.30 and a strike rate of 131.17.
KKR, captained by Eoin Morgan, was defeated by Chennai Super Kings in the final of the season played on 15 October. Chennai, under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, won the title match by 27 runs and achieved the distinction of becoming the IPL champion for the fourth time. Kolkata has won the IPL title twice before this.
