New Delhi. The BCCI has named former captain Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of India. At the same time, after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, Virat Kohli will also step down as T20 International captain. It is also being said that if the Indian team fails to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament, then they can also lose the captaincy of the ODI team. After Virat Kohli, vice-captain Rohit Sharma is at the fore in the race to take over the captaincy of Team India, as he has proved his captaincy ability in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Along with this, he has also successfully led the ‘Men in Blue’ in many T20 Internationals and ODIs. However, they cannot be considered as a long term option. In such a situation, players like KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant can also be options to consider.
Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik has come up with a solution that can solve the riddle of Team India’s captaincy. Talking with Cricbuzz, the wicketkeeper-batsman has suggested that the team management, for the time being, name Rohit Sharma and prepare the likes of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul for the future. Dinesh Karthik said, “It would be appropriate to give Rohit Sharma a chance to lead India for a year or two in the white-ball format. Allow him to be the captain for two World Cups. You have to give that credit to him and go ahead and give him a chance to represent the country as a captain. He has to be allowed to showcase his skills as a captain as well.”
He further said, “It will be really good in the limited time, he has captained India in ODIs and T20 Internationals. He has brought a lot of success, he knows his qualities, he knows his skills. Before you bring in young players like Rishabh Pant, or KL Rahul for that matter and make them captain, you have to give them a chance.”
Dinesh Karthik further said that Rohit Sharma and the Indian Cricket Board are working together to find out the next Indian captain. He also suggested that if the BCCI feels that the youngsters are capable of doing the job, then they can also be considered.
He said, “It is important to have a candid conversation with Rohit Sharma and find out who he would like to have as his deputy so that when he is not around, it is humanly impossible for Rohit to play all the matches in all formats. Once he decides that he is the captain, he should have a conversation with Rohit. The message should be ‘We are looking around KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Is there any instruction that you want one of the two to be your deputy?’
