DRS Controversy Mumbai Indians vs Chennai SuperKings IPL 2022 Sanjay Manjrekar Piyush Chawla

The start of the 59th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 was a bit strange. DRS was not available in the first two overs due to a power cut at the Wankhede Stadium. Because of this, it took only two balls to effect the match. Chennai Super Kings opener Devon Conway had to return to the pavilion without taking a review after being adjudged LBW off Daniel Sams. Sanjay Manjrekar and Piyush Chawla have spoken about this. Both have also raised questions about poor umpiring.

‘If Dhoni does not want to play, then he can become the head coach or mentor of CSK’

ESPNcricinfo experts Sanjay Manjrekar and Piyush Chawla termed Conway’s decision as the latest example of poor umpiring in the IPL. Chawla said, ‘He didn’t get out at first sight because when the ball hit the pads, then he had to go further and it looked like it would have left the leg-stump. We have seen some bad umpiring decisions this season and this was a testament to that.

Manjrekar said, “In international cricket, there is talk that the white ball swings only in the first two-three overs. I saw Riley Meredith bowling an accurate out swing in the seventh-eighth over. I had a lot of fun watching Jasprit Bumrah bowl two overs with the new ball and trouble the batsmen with swing. The ball was moving, it was bowling brilliantly and a technical glitch helped him. There were two decisions on which the review could be used.

Apart from this, he feels that the umpiring of Indian umpires has been worrying this season. He said, ‘The problem is that due to the corona epidemic you cannot call the best umpires in the world and because of this you have to work with the local umpires. The DRS was not there for 10 minutes and within that time things went wrong. I feel very sad to see such decisions. Earlier also I saw when the ball fell four-six inches outside the leg-stump and was given out lbw. It’s disappointing.
