ENG vs NZ 2nd Test Day 1 Stumps Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell puts New Zealand in a strong position at the end of Day 1


New Zealand scored 318 runs at stumps on the first day of the second cricket test against England. Daryl Mitchell is unbeaten on 81 runs for New Zealand. Electing to bat after losing the toss, New Zealand got off to a good start. Team openers Will Young and Tom Latham shared a brilliant 84 runs for the first wicket.

After lunch, New Zealand lost the wickets of Henry Nicholls and Devon Conway. Nicholls was given life in the slips on the score of 16 runs by Jacques Crowley. He returned after scoring 30 runs off England captain Ben Stokes, caught by wicketkeeper Ben Fox. Three overs later, Fox took a catch of Conway (46) while the bowler was Jimmy Anderson.

Daryl Mitchell is playing 81 runs in 147 balls and Tom Blundell 67 runs in 136 balls at stumps on the first day. Blundell also got life support when he had not even opened an account. Joe Root dropped his easy catch at first slip off Stokes.

The sky was cloudy in the morning and England won the toss and invited New Zealand to bat. New Zealand’s opener and stand-in captain Tom Latham and Will Young put on an 84-run partnership for the first wicket.

But Young (47 runs) was caught by Ben Stokes off the bat and caught at second slip by Jacques Crowley. Stokes soon put Jimmy Anderson on the bowling and the veteran pacer tempted Latham (26 runs) to do a pull shot which he could not time properly and it ended up in the hands of Matthew Potts standing at midwicket.

New Zealand’s regular captain Kane Williamson tested positive for the corona virus on Thursday and is in quarantine so that he could not play in this match.
