New Delhi. The second Test match between England and New Zealand is to be played in Nottingham from today (June 10) and even before this match, the visiting team has suffered a major setback. Captain Kane Williamson has been found to be Corona positive and due to this has been ruled out of the second Test. Williamson had minor symptoms on Thursday. After this he had a rapid antigen test for corona, in which the report has come positive. Now he will be in isolation for at least five days. New Zealand coach Gary Stead has confirmed this.
Hamish Rutherford has been included in New Zealand’s squad as a replacement for Williamson. Tom Latham will lead the New Zealand team in Williamson’s absence. In the first match of the 3-match Test series, New Zealand had to face defeat by 5 wickets.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead said, “It is a shame that Kane Williamson is forced out before such an important match. We all feel bad for him at the moment and know how disappointed he must be. Hamish was with the Test team in the first tour and is playing for Leicestershire Fox in the Vitality T20 Blast.
Other Kiwi players report negative
The good thing is that the report of the Rapid Antigen Test of the rest of the players of New Zealand has come negative. Nevertheless, the team will follow the protocol set for the corona and if further symptoms are seen in any player, then they will be re-tested. This is not the first time that the New Zealand team has been hit by Corona on this tour. Earlier, three players of the team Henry Nicholls, Blair Tickner and Shane Jurgeson were found to be Corona positive before the warm-up match against Sussex. After this he was sent to isolation.
Williamson troubled by elbow injury
It is a double blow for Williamson to be Corona positive after suffering a loss in the first Test against England. This is also a problem for their own rehabilitation. He has already missed five Tests for New Zealand due to an elbow injury. In his absence, Tom Latham captained the Test series against Bangladesh and South Africa at home.
Williamson was a flop in the Lord’s Test
Williamson scored 17 runs in both the innings in the Lord’s Test. At the same time, he was also out for zero in the warm-up match in Chelmsford. Prior to this Test series, he was captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022 and scored just 216 runs at an average of 19 for the Hyderabad team before returning to New Zealand for the birth of a son.
