Asian Badminton Championships 2022: Olympic medalists PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal beat their first-round rivals in a tough contest at the Badminton Asian Championships on Wednesday, but Lakshya Sen and B Sai Praneeth crashed out of the competition. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, had to struggle against Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu Po.
The fourth seeded Indian, however, managed an 18-21 27-25 21-9 win in an hour and 17 minutes after losing the first game in the women’s singles first round match. London Olympics bronze medalist Saina, who is making a comeback after an injury, defeated Sim Eujin of South Korea 21-15 17-21 21-13 in a tight match. Both these players have now reached the second round of the tournament.
Lakshya Sen disappointed
World Championships bronze medalist Lakshya, however, fell victim to an upset against unseeded Li Shi Feng of China. The fifth seeded Indian suffered a 21-12 10-21 19-21 loss to Fang in the men’s singles match that lasted 56 minutes. World No. 19 Praneeth also suffered a straight-game 17-21 13-21 loss to Indonesia’s Jonathan Christie in the first round. At the same time, Kidambi Srikanth defeated TJ Yong Ng of Malaysia in straight games to enter the second round of men’s singles. Srikanth defeated his opponent 22-20 21-15. He will next take on qualifier Weng Hong Yeung of China.
These Indians also lost their matches
Akarshi Kashyap also crashed out of the competition in women’s singles with a 15-219-21 loss to top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam and Simran Singhi and Ritika Thakar also bowed out of the tournament after losing straight games. Ashwini and Shikha lost 19-21 12-21 to Malaysian pair of Ana Ching Yik Cheong and Teoh Mei Shing, while Simran and Ritika lost 15-sided to seventh seeded Malaysian pair of Pierri Ten and Muralitharan Thinnah. Lost 21 11-21.
