Former Australia spinner Ashley Mallett died of cancer at the age of 76 due to cancer. The South Australian spinner breathed his last in Adelaide late on Friday night. Mallett played a total of 38 Tests and 9 ODIs in an international career spanning 12 years.

New Delhi. Former Australia spinner Ashley Mallett died of cancer at the age of 76 due to cancer. The South Australian spinner breathed his last in Adelaide late on Friday night. Mallett played a total of 38 Tests and 9 ODIs in an international career spanning 12 years. He made his Test debut against England in 1968 and played the last Test of his career in 1980 against this team. He took 132 wickets in Tests at an average of 29.84. He did the feat of taking 10 wickets once, 5 wickets 6 times.

Mallet was counted among the best off-spinners in the world. He took 8 wickets for 59 runs in an innings of Adelaide Test against Pakistan in 1972. This is the best performance by any finger spinner in Australia. Nathan Lyon (399 wickets), Hugh Trumbull (141 wickets) are ahead of him. Mallett was born in Sydney. But he was raised in Perth. Where legendary spinner Clary Grimmett did the work of carving him.

Ashley Mallett took 28 wickets in four Test matches on the tour of India in 1969-70. Then Australia defeated India and won the 4-Test series 3-1. Apart from this, he took 17 wickets in the 1974-75 Ashes series. Mallet used to bowl with high arm action. So he used to get extra bounce as compared to other bowlers. He was called ‘Rowdy’ by fellow players.
