New Delhi. The Pakistan Cricket Board is eyeing the coach Gary Kirsten, who made India the World Cup champion. The PCB wants Kirsten to be the permanent coach of the Pakistani cricket team in place of Misbah-ul-Haq. Apart from this, Simon Katich and Peter Moores are also in the race to become coaches. Just before the T20 World Cup 2021, Pakistan team’s head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis had resigned.
India won the ODI World Cup title in the year 2011 under the coach of Gary Kirsten. At the same time, former Australian opener Simon Katich has worked as an assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders. Apart from this, he played the role of head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) till the first phase of IPL 2021. Peter Moores has been the head coach of England twice. Moores recently signed a three-year contract with Nottinghamshire. Moores is one of the few coaches to have won county championship titles with two different teams.
Before the T20 World Cup, Misbah and bowling coach Waqar Younis had parted ways from the Pakistani team. The PCB appointed former off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as the interim head coach for the World Cup. At the same time, former all-rounder Abdul Razzaq was made the bowling coach. Pakistani cricket has changed a lot with Rameez Raja taking over as the PCB chief. According to the Indian Express report, Rameez Raja is in favor of appointing a full-time foreign coach. However, PCB needs to persuade their favorite candidates, because nowadays most of the coaches are keen to get involved with franchise cricket, which earns more in less time.
However, the resignation of Misbah and Waqar did not affect the performance of the Pakistani team in the T20 World Cup. Pakistan first defeated India by 10 wickets in a one-sided match in the Super-12 stage of the World Cup. After this, defeated New Zealand by 5 wickets in a thrilling match. In Group A, Pakistan’s team is on top after winning two matches and the path to the semi-finals has become very easy for them.
