Government Issues Order Against Amazon, Flipkart And Other E-Commerce Companies For Selling Seat Belt Alarm Stopper

Selling seat belt alarm stoppers to e-commerce companies can be costly. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued an order against big e-commerce companies for this. Seat belt alarm stoppers are being sold openly through the platforms of these companies.

These alarm stopper clips stop the alarm sounding when the seat belt is not worn and thus pose a safety hazard to the customers. The Ministry of Highways and Transport has raised the issue of sale of car seat belt alarm stopper clips and called for action against vendors and e-commerce platforms selling these.

“It is pertinent to mention that car seat belt alarm stopper clips can also be a deterrent for customers making claims in cases of motor insurance policies. The reason why insurance companies use such clips can deny the claim on the grounds of negligence on the part of the claimant. Also, the use of seat belts provides proper cushion to the airbags and protects the passengers in the event of a collision.”

last year amazon removed listings for seatbelt alarm blockers from its platform. The company had said that this product would not be available for sale on its website. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had asked the company to stop selling such blockers. Gadkari had said that there is a need to change the mindset of the people to increase road safety. “People think that back seat occupants don’t need seatbelts. That’s a problem. Both front and back seat occupants are required to wear seatbelts,” he said. He had told that the Ministry of Highways and Transport is working on making six airbags mandatory for all cars.
