Women Team New Captain: Hours after Mithali Raj’s international retirement, Harmanpreet Kaur was on Wednesday named India’s ODI captain for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The Indian women’s team will play three T20 Internationals and as many ODIs in Dambulla and Kandy respectively during their tour of Sri Lanka starting June 23.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mithali announced her retirement from international cricket, after which India’s T20 captain Harmanpreet took over the reins of the ODIs and Smriti Mandhana has been made the vice-captain. One of the big names missing from the list is veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami, while Sneh Rana, who featured in this year’s World Cup, is also missing from both the teams.

Middle order batsman Harleen Deol has played only one ODI. He has been included in the team, while Jemima Rodrigues has returned to India’s T20 team. This will be Jemima’s first international match after the T20I series against Australia in October 2021. There is also Radha Yadav returning to the T20 mix, who last played in July 2021. On the other hand, opener S Meghna recently scored 73 runs for the trailblazer in the Women’s T20 Challenge and has been given a spot. Bowling all-rounder Simran Bahadur, who featured in India’s tour of New Zealand just ahead of the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, has also been included in both the teams.
