Sehwag recently made a shocking disclosure about his international debut in an interview. Sehwag said how he was about to make his India debut in 1998. He was about to catch a flight to Dubai. Only then a phone call came and the information received from the other side broke the dream of Sehwag’s debut.
Virender Sehwag told this anecdote in response to a question asked about his debut on the Breakfast with Champions show. Sehwag said, during the Coca-Cola Cup in Sharjah in 1998, he suddenly got a call and was asked by the Indian team management to reach Sharjah immediately. After this, Sehwag had reached the airport and was about to board the flight when he received a call and was asked to stay back in India. In this way his debut kept happening.
Sehwag’s debut postponed
Sehwag said, “I got a call from Team India that many players have become ill and you have been selected in the Indian team. You have to come to Sharjah immediately. I got my ticket in a hurry. I packed my luggage and immediately left for the airport. After checking in at the airport, I went inside as well. At the same time, I got a phone call from the team management that you are no longer needed, the players who were ill have now recovered. In this way, the same situation had happened for me that the hand came but the mouth did not touch.
After this Sehwag had to return home and his dream of debut remained unfulfilled. However, after this, on April 1, 1999, Sehwag made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Sharjah itself.
Sachin had hit a stormy century
Even though Sehwag’s international debut was postponed for a few months. But the series for which Veeru was called to Sharjah. There was a storm of Sachin Tendulkar in it. Then Sachin took India to the final by scoring 143 runs against Australia in the Coca-Cola Cup and then won the trophy to India by playing an innings of 134 runs in the title match.
