New Delhi. India and Pakistan no longer face each other in bilateral series. That is why fans of both the countries eagerly wait for ICC tournaments, so that they can be seen playing against each other. In the upcoming T20 World Cup (ICC T20 World Cup 2021), there will be a clash between these two arch-rivals in Dubai on October 24. In such a situation, former Pakistan cricketer Waqar Younis is supporting Babar Azam and his team to defeat India for the first time in this mega event.
Like the 50-over World Cup, Pakistan has never been able to win over its arch-rivals India in the T20 World Cup. In T20 cricket, it all started with the first T20 World Cup in 2007, where the first match between the two teams ended in a tie, but India won by defeating Pakistan in a ball-out. After this India and Pakistan faced in the T20 World Cup final in 2007 itself. In this match, India lifted the trophy by winning a thrilling five-run victory. Since then it has been only one-sided and Pakistan has been losing to India in the World Cup tournament.
However, Waqar Younis feels that if Pakistan plays to their potential, they can definitely overtake India. Waqar said in a conversation with Krikwick, “I sincerely believe that if Pakistan plays to its potential, then they can beat India in their opening match. It won’t be easy, but we definitely have players who can do well.”
He added, “It is a big game and there will be pressure on both the teams as this will be their first match of the tournament. But the first few balls and runs will be important, but if we can do it well, we can win the game.”
Waqar backs Hasan Ali to lead the bowling attack
Waqar Younis was Pakistan’s bowling coach until recently, but on the day of the announcement of the T20 World Cup squad, he resigned along with head coach Misbah-ul-Haq. Having coached the current bowlers, the 49-year-old believes that this bowling attack could well save the score. He also praised Hasan Ali for being the best and backed him to lead the bowling attack.
He said, “Bowling has always been our strong side and we have seen in the past that we have the ability to defend the score. We did this in the Champions Trophy 2017. We’ve done that before, so I don’t see any reason why this team can’t repeat those performances. I think Hasan understands bowling better than any other bowler in the current team and will be our leader when it comes to bowling. He definitely has the skill and character to do big things on the big stage.”
