Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that visiting captain Kane Williamson will be the biggest challenge for India in the two-match Test series against New Zealand. The Indian team will play the first test match from today at Green Park, Kanpur. Pathan further said that Williamson is a ‘great cricketer, especially when it comes to Test cricket. The Indian team playing at home has not yet lost the series at home to New Zealand. New Zealand, however, won the title by defeating India in the final of the ICC World Test Championship and now it is India’s chance to avenge that. Since 1952 till now, the Indian team has played a total of 22 Test matches at Greenpark, in which India has won seven while it has tasted defeat in three.
Irfan Pathan while talking to Star Sports said, ‘If we talk about the two-match Test series, then if there is any player who can challenge Team India, it is Kane Williamson. He is a great cricketer. Especially when it comes to Tests. In the three matches played so far against New Zealand at Green Park, Kanpur, India’s side has had two matches and one draw. In 2004, India defeated New Zealand by eight wickets, while in 2016 the Indian team got the gift of winning the 500th Test by 197 runs at this ground.
The former Indian all-rounder talked about another challenge for India apart from Williamson. He said that the second challenge for India will be to play at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Pathan said, ‘The second challenge for India will be the Wankhede Stadium. The pitch in Mumbai will suit New Zealand cricketers more, it will also have bounce. If we don’t get a pitch that supports spinners, and the pitch is bouncy, good as it usually is, then New Zealand can challenge India.
