India probably made Bumrah Test captain after looking at Cummins and Stokes: Ian Chappell

Sydney. One of Australia’s great Ian Chappell has termed the appointment of Jasprit Bumrah as India’s caretaker Test captain as a “courageous decision” based on his “strategic understanding” of the game. He said that the battle between Bumrah and England’s Ben Stokes as captain (Jasprit Bumrah vs Ben Stokes) is the fascinating aspect of the entertaining match going on in Birmingham.

Comparing various contemporary international captains, the former Australia captain said one should not be surprised to see Stokes’ success as captain as he understands the bowling. Chappell wrote in his column for ‘Cricinfo’, ‘India probably followed the success of Pat Cummins and Stokes as captain by appointing fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the current Test. It is a daring appointment and Bumrah has a lot to offer. Referring to the India-England Test in Birmingham, he said, “His (Bumrah’s) leadership battle with Stokes is the fascinating aspect of this entertaining match.”

Chappell is impressed by Stokes’ appointment as captain. He wrote, ‘No one should be surprised by the success of Ben Stokes as captain. He is an all-rounder who understands bowling. His priority on the field is taking wickets and despite Joe Root’s stupendous success as a batsman, Stokes remains England’s most inspiring player on the field.

He then told the secret of Cummins’s success. He said, ‘Like Stokes, no one should be surprised by the success of Cummins. He is leading a diversified bowling attack which has very good bowlers. He uses them wisely. He also has very experienced spinners like Nathan Lyon.
