Virat scored his 71st international century against Afghanistan
Bangladesh and Sri Lankan spinners faced 3 centuries in ODIs
New Delhi. These days Virat Kohli is back in the style of ‘King Kohli’. By scoring 2 centuries in 3 ODIs against Sri Lanka, he proved that the storm has not weakened yet. Team India now has to play ODI series against New Zealand (IND vs NZ). Virat Kohli will be the biggest concern for the Kiwi team. The absence of Tim Southee will affect the pace attack of the team. There are 2 better spinners in the New Zealand team as Mitchell Santer and Ish Sodhi. However, after seeing the condition of Rashid Khan, Shakib Al Hasan and Wanindu Hasaranga, there is very little scope for these two spinners.
Virat Kohli’s tremendous form started in a sense with the Asia Cup played in August-September. In this tournament played in T20 format, Virat scored a century against Afghanistan. This was his 71st international century, which came after a wait of 3 years. In this match, Kohli hit an unbeaten 122 runs in 61 balls at a strike rate of 200. It included 6 sixes and 12 fours. Rashid Khan, one of the best spinners in the world, was present in the Afghanistan team, but even he could not stop Virat.
Shakib’s rescued sixes
Virat played an inning of 113 runs in 91 balls in the third ODI against Bangladesh in December last, which included 11 fours and 2 sixes. This was Virat’s 44th ODI century. Earlier in 2019, he had scored a century in ODI format. In this match, Virat and Ishaan along with other Bangladeshi bowlers also thrashed star spinner Shakib Al Hasan. Shakib had spent 68 runs in his 10 overs. In the 3 ODI series against Sri Lanka, Kohli scored 2 centuries. Virat scored 113 runs in the first ODI. Sri Lanka’s best spinner Wanindu Hasaranga could not take Virat’s wicket even after scoring 67 runs. In the last ODI, Virat played an unbeaten inning of 166 runs. In this match also, Hasaranga failed to stop Kohli. He gave 54 runs in his 10 overs without taking a wicket.
What will Santner and Sodhi do?
34-year-old Virat played very well in all these matches from Rashid to Hasranga. He is making full use of his feet against the spinners. Kohli is easily hitting the gap by going on the backfoot. This is not a good sign for New Zealand star spinners Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi. Left-handed bowler Santner has dismissed Virat only once in the ODI format, while Sodhi has managed to take his wicket 3 times.
