The spectators created a ruckus during the match
New Delhi. The Indian cricket team was defeated by Australia in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on Thursday. Harmanpreet Kaur scored a brilliant fifty but she could not lead the team to victory due to an unfortunate run out. With this defeat, the memory of the 4 defeats the Indian team got at home in the 1996 ODI World Cup was reminisced. This one defeat of Team India ended the career of explosive batsman Vinod Kambli.
How can any cricket fan forget the 1996 ODI World Cup? The incident that happened during this match is a matter of shame for any host country. India hosted this ICC tournament together with Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The first semi-final match of the World Cup was played between Sri Lanka and India at the Eden Gardens ground in Kolkata. This match could not be completed due to the mischief of the fans who came to watch the match. The Sri Lankan team was declared the winner by the match referee after seeing the situation.
Spectators created ruckus in the match
The Sri Lankan team, batting first in this match, scored 251 runs for 8 wickets thanks to Aravinda D’Silva’s 66 and Roshan Mahanama’s 58 runs. The victory was looking easy for India. The first wicket fell in the form of Navjot Singh Sidhu. After this Sachin Tendulkar got out after scoring 65 runs. The game changed from here and India’s score went from 2 wickets for 98 runs to 8 wickets for 120 runs. The fans could not digest this and vandalized the stadium. Some fans even set it on fire. The match referee stopped the match and after some time it was started but the fans started throwing balls at the Sri Lankan players. The match could not be played after this and India got out after losing.
Batter cried on the field, the shining star drowned
Vinod Kambli had scored 10 runs in this match and he was standing on the ground. When the match resumed and the fans threw bowls of water at the Sri Lankan players, the match referee stopped the match. When Kambli realized that now he would not be able to do anything for the team and the team was out of the World Cup, he started crying bitterly on the field itself. All the countrymen had seen his suffering on TV.
Kambli could never recover from the defeat
Vinod Kambli was deeply shocked by what happened on the ground of Eden Gardens. After this match, he went on to play more than 35 ODIs for India, but his performance was not good. He could not bat with the passion for which this left-handed batsman was known. Finally, in October 2000, he got out after playing the last ODI of his career against Sri Lanka. After this, he could never return to the team.
