Indian Army will buy electric vehicles, the target is to reduce carbon emissions


The sales of electric vehicles are increasing in the country. The Indian Army has also decided to buy Electric Vehicles (EV) for select units. This will be a step towards furthering the central government’s policy of reducing carbon emissions. 25 percent of light vehicles, 38 percent of buses and 48 percent of motorcycles in select units of the army will be replaced by EVs.

officials said that EV Aspects such as the Army’s requirement of the vehicles and their use in inaccessible places will be considered before finalizing the plan for induction. Necessary infrastructure such as charging points will be provided to support the ecosystem connected to electric vehicles in army units. “The EV charging stations will have at least one fast charger and two to three slow chargers. Apart from this, electric circuit cables and transformers with adequate load capacity will be kept,” said an official. The army will soon issue an initial tender for 60 electric buses.

A few months ago, the army gave a presentation related to electric vehicles to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. In this, companies like Tata Motors and Revolt Motor gave information about their EVs. Recently, the new indigenously built armored vehicle Kalyani M4 has been inducted in the army fleet. Bharat Forge has sent 16 units of this vehicle to the army for UN peacekeeping operations. It is the state-of-the-art Armored Personal Carrier. The company claims that the people riding in this vehicle get protection from many dangers like grenade blast.

The Kalyani M4 is a Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle (Heavy) capable of carrying an infantry platoon with full equipment. The company said that this vehicle has completed many challenging tasks in very difficult conditions in the country. trial has been completed successfully. These include snowfall in Leh and Ladakh and scorching heat in the desert. It has a range of 800 kms, which will help in reaching the military force in minimum time even in difficult places. It is equipped with modern military-grade power engine. It can withstand a blast of up to 10 kg of TNT under the wheels and an IED blast of up to 50 kg on one side.
