New Delhi. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has shown many exciting moments to the fans since the start of the UAE leg of the 2021 season. However, some of the umpiring decisions in the UAE phase of the tournament have drawn criticism. While the on-field officials have been pretty consistent with their decisions, it is the third umpire’s call that has left many disappointed. Even in the match between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings, the fans once again got a bad view of umpiring. Earlier, in the match between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, there was a lot of ruckus about umpiring.
Another incident of normal umpiring by the third umpire has come to light in the match between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings on Monday, after which Sunil Gavaskar reprimanded the TV umpire. CSK’s Dwayne Bravo was given the responsibility of defending 6 runs in the last over of the match. This West Indies bowler bowled the second ball of the over outside the off-stump. Actually, that ball did not even land on the pitch. In such a situation, the players of Delhi Capitals quickly ran for a single run to get 2 extras from the ball.
The line umpire signaled a no ball as the ball had landed outside the pitch, but the decision was later reversed after the third umpire sought advice. According to the rules, if the ball is completely or partially out of the pitch, the umpire is obliged to signal a no-ball (Law 61). This decision of the third umpire to change the call of the on-field umpire surprised many. Gavaskar did not understand why the TV umpire decided to call it a wide instead of a no-ball. When Delhi Capitals needed 4 runs off 5 balls, which would have resulted in a free-hit on the next ball.
After the match, Gavaskar said on Star Sports, “That was clearly a no ball. We have taken certain decisions from the TV umpires, who can make the difference between victory and defeat in these circumstances, and this should not happen.” He said, “Such decisions should not change the game. It’s a good thing Delhi won because it could have changed the game.”

This over proved to be interesting for the fans, with Dwayne Bravo getting Axar Patel out on the third ball to bring CSK back into the match again. Kagiso Rabada was at the crease. Delhi Capitals needed 2 runs in 3 balls to win the match, then Rabada hit a four on the fourth delivery to complete the run-chase.
Thankfully, the decision of Delhi Capitals did not affect the outcome of the match. Shimron Hetmyer stood firmly in the middle to help his team win. Shikhar Dhawan scored 39 runs in 35 balls for Delhi Capitals. Hetmyer played the role of a finisher in the team. He completed this exciting run chase by playing an innings of 28 runs in just 18 balls. With this win, Delhi Capitals has once again reached the top of the points table, beating Chennai Super Kings.
Delhi Capitals have secured 20 points by winning 10 out of 13 matches. At the same time, Chennai Super Kings have 9 wins in 13 matches and they have 18 points. Royal Challengers Bangalore are at the third place in the points table with 16 points with 8 wins from 12 matches. Kolkata Knight Riders are in fourth place, who have earned 12 points with 6 wins in 13 matches.
