In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, defending champions Mumbai Indians suffered a four-wicket defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals on Saturday. After restricting Mumbai to 129 runs in 20 overs, Delhi won the match by scoring 132 runs in 19.1 overs for the loss of six wickets. After this defeat, Mumbai’s hopes of reaching the playoffs have suffered a major setback. Mumbai will now have to rely on other teams to qualify for the playoffs as they have 10 points from 12 matches with just 5 wins. They also have the lowest net run rate among the four teams with 10 points in the points table.
Despite the loss to Delhi, Mumbai was seen celebrating after the match. Mumbai Indians on Sunday shared a video of their dressing room on Twitter, in which the team gathered together after the match. In the video, Mumbai Indians are seen honoring their batsman Suryakumar Yadav and fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile with the dressing room player of the match award. Suryakumar is seen wearing the badges by coach Mahela Jayawardene and Coulter-Nile by the team’s mentor Sachin Tendulkar.
Suryakumar scored 33 runs in 26 balls against Delhi, in which he hit two fours and as many sixes. Apart from them, Coulter-Nile took one wicket for 19 runs in four overs. Coulter-Nile dismissed compatriot and star batsman Steve Smith. Mumbai will now have to win both the remaining matches to go to the playoffs, see the results of the other teams and also improve their run rate.
