New Delhi. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) led by Virat Kohli has had a great performance in IPL 2021. The team has played some great characters in the tournament so far and made it to the playoffs as well. The team captain along with Devdutt Padikkal has been instrumental in providing the team with a flying start. Virat Kohli is often seen applying pressure early in the innings before slowing down a bit after the powerplay. He is often criticized for his slow batting in the middle overs. In such a situation, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has taken the side of Virat Kohli.
According to Gautam Gambhir, strike rate is an overrated thing and it is unreasonable to expect that Kohli will play with Maxwell’s nature and still score big. He further said that it is the combination of different skills that makes the team successful. Talking to ESPNcricinfo, Gambhir said, “The strike rates are very overrated. You can expect a 600-run season from Kohli, but you can’t expect it from Maxwell. You get 120-125 to Maxwell [स्ट्राइक रेट] Can’t expect to bat but can expect Kohli to bat at 160. So both of them are different and it is the combination of all that makes a successful team.”
‘It’s Virat Kohli’s natural game’
The former cricketer conceded that Virat Kohli has taken the lead in providing a steady start to the team in the power play and then expects the middle-order to take the momentum forward for the team. He termed the RCB captain as a world class player and said that when he plays his natural game, he will give his best.
Gautam Gambhir said, “It depends on the wicket and I believe it is because of Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. He feels that those two guys can pick up the pace and he can play an anchor in the second half, which he has done really well. Maybe that’s why he likes to open the batting. Get the pace in the first six overs and then continue to bat while someone from the other end can pick up the pace.”
He further said, “It is his natural game, but if he gets out of it then it will be difficult for him to score too many runs because he does not have the power or skill like AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxves. But look, you need all kinds of players in your XI and Virat Kohli is world class, no doubt about it.
