Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting knows that franchise teams will be able to retain only three-four players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction. Delhi Capitals suffered a three-wicket defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the second qualifier of IPL 2021 on Wednesday. In this way, the dream of Delhi Capitals winning the IPL title for the first time was once again shattered. Delhi Capitals, who reached the playoffs on top of the points table, were defeated by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the first qualifier. After the loss in the second qualifier, Ponting revealed which players he would like to retain for the next season.
Ponting admitted that his team could not survive against KKR. When Ponting was asked about retaining players, he said, ‘I would like to see everyone back in the team. To be honest, all the players in Delhi Capitals are fantastic, the playing staff, the coaches have all done a great job. The performance of the team in the last two seasons also reflects this. It is unfortunate to end the season like this, we know we will be able to retain only three or four players.
He said, ‘Many of these players will have to go back to the auction, but I will try to get as many of them back in the team. The last three seasons have been great for us. Last season, Delhi Capitals were the runners-up. Delhi Capitals played under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer last season, but due to Iyer’s injury in the first phase of this season, Rishabh Pant was made the captain. Iyer made a comeback in the second season, but Pant was retained as the captain.
