New Delhi. Kashmir young fast bowler Umran Malik, who bowled at a speed of 150 kmph against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was described by star player Parvez Rasool as a horse of a long race. Rasool, the only cricketer from Kashmir to play international cricket, is very impressed with this young talent. This 21-year-old player threw a ball against KKR at a speed of 151.03 km. He is the fastest Indian bowler to bowl this season.
In the IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad, his speed in 11 out of 24 balls was more than 145 kms. Rasool told PTI-language that he is a very talented player. When I played him in the nets, he was quick. He was very sharp (fast), but it was on a different level (in IPL). The player, who represented the Indian team in limited overs cricket, said that he was really dodging the batsmen at a fast pace. I was very proud to see him play like this on such a big stage.
The secret of Umran’s speed is the tennis ball
When Rasool was asked that Umran’s physical structure is not as strong as most fast bowlers, then from where does he get this speed. To this Rasool said that I do not think that he has taken any formal coaching in his early years. He used to play tennis ball cricket with a fee of 500 or thousand rupees before joining the coaching camp of the District Sports Council. Rasool said that if you look at some of our best fast bowlers including Jasprit Bumrah, they have all been tennis ball cricket products. He argued that the light weight of the tennis ball means you need extra effort to gain speed. This player developed strength and speed by playing with a tennis ball.
Samad takes Umran to the net
Rasool said that he was introduced to Umran through Abdul Samad (his teammate at Sunrisers). Umran used to participate in the net session of Jammu and Kashmir with him. He said that he is very close to Samad. It was Samad who took him to the nets of the state team. I think when he was at the Under-19 level, he lacked consistency. Maybe that’s why he didn’t get many chances in Cooch Behar or Vijay Merchant Trophy. Rasool feels that Umran still needs to play a lot more matches in domestic cricket to be fully prepared.
He however has the potential to be a player for any team. He said that he bowls at 150 and if he can swing (inswing or outswing) continuously at that pace, the batsmen will not be able to handle him. He said that he has now played only 3 matches at this level and once he plays Ranji Trophy, he will get even better.
