Mumbai Indians have won the title in four (2013, 2015, 2019 and 2020) of the five fastest run-scorers for Kieron Pollard. He has also been a part of the team’s leadership group for the past few years. Mumbai Indians have won only two matches out of 11 this year and obviously there is resentment among the fans too. Despite this, former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori disagrees on giving Pollard a chance and giving rest to the players.
Vettori said, ‘Franchise can’t think emotionally like a fan. As the bishop said, they have to remember the past and at the same time keep an eye on the future. Is Pollard part of that future Mumbai Indians team? According to me, he is definitely a part of the future. There have been some seasons in the past where he did not start well, but he has made a tremendous comeback. It is very important that he plays the remaining matches as well as he will be a part of this franchise in the future as well.
This year Pollard’s biggest weakness has been his spin bowling. He has scored runs in front of spin at an average of only 6.80 and strike rate of 82.92, and such a situation has come that the opposition puts spinners against him as soon as he comes. Vettori, who himself has bowled to Pollard, believes that the struggle is not a result of his decline in the game but his mental discomfort.
Vettori said, “As a spinner, he is a dangerous batsman because he has a very long reach and can start attacking you with the first or second ball. We are seeing (this season) that he is playing spin defensively. When you overpitch him, he comes into his own color and can hit you straight for a six. There is a clear tension in their game at the moment and perhaps this is a reflection of the overall performance of the team. It may happen that he wants to take the responsibility of the team on his shoulders and wants to take the team to victory like last season but it is not happening.
