New Delhi. Like normal days, during the winter season in 2017, coach Randhir Singh Manhas was busy training the players at Maulana Azad Stadium in Nawabad area of Jammu when a 17-year-old boy came close to him. He said sir will you let me bowl. Manhas remembers very well that Jatin Wadhawan, the batsman of the senior team of the state, was at the crease at that time. The coach asked the boy the name and he replied, ‘Umran Malik.’ Manhas accepted the request of the boy and till date he did not understand how he agreed. At that time though he needed a bowler in the nets. However, initially, Umran had to be scolded by the coach for not being serious about the game.
Randhir Singh Manhas played an important role in fulfilling the dreams of Umran Malik. One of the fastest bowlers in the history of Indian cricket, Umran Malik has taken 15 wickets in 8 matches of IPL 2022. He took 5 wickets against Gujarat Titans. Not only this, he also bowled 4 batsmen. He took 5 wickets for the first time in T20 career. Jammu District Cricket Council coach Manhas said that his balls were too fast for Jatin. I thought that guy was special and the team’s senior fast bowler Ramdayal felt the same way. Ram said that the future of this boy is bright.
earn money from every match
Umran Malik did not get any coaching till the age of 17, nor did he ever play with the leather ball. He used to play Mohalla Tennis Ball Tournament, from which he used to get 500 to 3000 rupees per match. Born in a middle-class family in Gujjar Nagar, Jammu, Umran’s father has a fruit shop in the local market. He wanted the son to get good education, but later he encouraged him to play cricket.
went to trial by asking for a loaned shoe
Umran Malik was asked to enroll in the academy, but Manhas remembers that he was never a regular in 2017-18. Talking to PTI, he said that he would come one day and be absent for the next several days. We had to tell him that he has to be disciplined in practice. I told him that the day you play for the country, there will be no looking back. Need to be serious. He said that I sent him for the Under-19 trial, in which he bowled by asking for borrowed shoes. He was selected in the Cooch Behar Trophy, but got only one match and it rained in that match against Odisha.
didn’t get a chance to go to the gym
Before becoming a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Umran never went to the gym systematically, but his body is quite strong. Manhas said that he lives near the Tawi river and the land on the banks of the river is sandy. Umran grew up running on it and initially played cricket there. This strengthened the lower part of his body. Kashmiri players dominated the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team, but Umran was helped by his own teammate Abdul Samad, who himself is also a part of the Sunrisers team.
Samad sent videos of his bowling to VVS Laxman and Tom Moody in June 2020. At that time only a few people were practicing after the first lockdown. Sunrisers liked his videos and thus paved the way for his entry into the team. Umran got a chance to play for Hyderabad after T Natarajan was injured last season.
