IPL: Ahead of the e-auction of the new media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated to increase the number of matches that will be played per season in the rich league in 2023-27. There will be 74 matches in the first two years of the Indian Cricket Board cycle, 2023 and 2024.
Number of matches will increase
After this there will be 84 matches in the next few seasons. A Cricbuzz report said that the matches could increase to 94 in the fifth and final season of the cycle, although the BCCI has also kept the option of 84 matches open. If this plan goes into effect, it will be interesting to see how the BCCI will split the number of games for each team in the IPL to round out the numbers 84 and 94.
BCCI is making new plan
So far the league has been divided into two virtual groups of five teams, with each team playing twice against the four other teams in their group. If the playoffs are included in the matches, then this number reaches 74. Overall, the number of games in Package C over five years will be 96, including each season’s opening match, four playoffs and double-header matches.
