Indian star batsman Virat Kohli has resigned from the Test captaincy. Kohli has surprised everyone with his decision to step down as India’s Test captain just a day after their 2-1 Test series loss at the hands of South Africa. However, Kohli ended his Test captaincy career as India’s most successful Test captain.
India registered 40 Test victories under Virat Kohli and he has stepped down as the world’s fourth most successful Test captain.

Kohli is the only Indian captain to register four overseas Test victories twice in a calendar year. Incidentally, it was under Kohli’s captaincy when India achieved the feat for the first time as well. India won Tests this year at Brisbane, Lord’s, The Oval and Centurion. In 2018, India won in Johannesburg, Nottingham, Adelaide and Melbourne.

After the departure of MS Dhoni took over the captaincy of the Indian Test team
Kohli led India for the first time in a Test match in the absence of MS Dhoni in Adelaide till the end of 2014. He took over as full-time captain in the same series soon after Dhoni’s Test retirement. Over the years, Kohli’s success as captain in Tests led him to take over the reins of other formats after Dhoni stepped down. Meanwhile, he surpassed Dhoni and became the most successful Indian Test captain.
Under Kohli’s leadership, India rose to the top of the Test rankings and managed to win a Test series in Australia for the first time in its history in 2018-19. The Indian team under Kohli gave a befitting reply to the critics by defeating him again after two years. India is currently very close to creating history even on the soil of England. India are leading 2-1 in the series in England and the fifth and final Test will be played this year. In the inaugural World Test Championship, India reached the final but lost to New Zealand.
