New Delhi. The Indian women’s team suffered a 0-3 defeat to Chinese Taipei in the pre-quarterfinals, ending their campaign at the World Table Tennis Championships here on Wednesday. All the three Indian players Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula and Diya Chitale lost their singles matches.
Manika, who was in poor form during the entire tournament, had no match with world number 22 Chen Su Yu. He lost the match easily by 0-3 (7-11, 9-11, 3-11). Sreeja posed a slight challenge to world No. 35 Ching I Ching, but she eventually lost 1-3 (8-11, 11-5 6-11, 9-11).
Chitale fought hard and at one point was in a position to beat Liu Hing Yin but eventually she too lost 2-3 (6-11, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11 7-11) Had to do The Indian team lost to Germany in the group stage but after that they defeated Czech Republic and Egypt. The Indian men’s team will take on China in the pre-quarterfinals on Thursday.

In the women’s event, Commonwealth Games mixed doubles gold medalist Sreeja Akula won the first and fourth matches against Egypt to seal India’s place in the knockouts. Experienced Manika Batra won the match after a disappointing performance against Germany but Diya Chitale had to face defeat. Shreeja beat Goda Khan 11-6-11-4, 11-1 and Dina Mishraf 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6 while Manika beat Dina 8-11, 11-6, 11 Defeated -7, 2-11, 11-8.
