Former English cricketer Michael Atherton has warned England that Ben Stokes is not a long-term option as Test captain. However, he has said that let the England team give them their all for a short time. Stokes was officially given the Test captaincy of England on Thursday. Joe Root resigned as Test captain last week after the team continued to lose.
The new managing director of the England cricket team, Rob Key, after appointing Stokes as the captain, said that the time was right for him. He also said that he is ready for additional responsibility. Atherton, who captained England in 54 Test matches between 1993 and 2001, agrees that the time is right for Stokes to be handed over the captaincy, but believes he should be only a short-lived captain.
England’s Test team has not performed well for a long time. In the last 17 matches under the captaincy of Joe Root, the team could win only one match. Now there is pressure for Ben Stokes to do well in the series against New Zealand and South Africa. The England team also has to play a match against the Indian team, which will be the rest of the Test series played last year. Team India is ahead 2-1 in the series.
