How the first IPL auction changed the life of an Indian pacer
Once upon a time, 500 rupees were available for a match, bumper money was found in the first auction
Mohammed Siraj First IPL Auction: How a player’s life changes in one stroke in the IPL auction. Many examples of this are seen in every year’s auction. Many players become millionaires overnight. Something similar happened with Team India’s fast bowler Mohammad Siraj. Siraj was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017 IPL auction for Rs 2.6 crore. But very few people would know that Siraj himself wanted to go to Virat Kohli’s team Royal Challengers Bangalore and had full hope that RCB would definitely buy him in the auction. He told the story related to this in the podcast of RCB. In this podcast, Siraj also told how he came to know that he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for such a hefty price.
Mohammad Siraj had told in the podcast of Royal Challengers Bangalore, the day the IPL auction was taking place, the Hyderabad team had a practice session. However, coach Bharat Arun sir asked me to take a break from practice. I remember he told me that there is IPL auction today, your attention will be there. That’s why you can take a break from practice today. I had then asked Bharat sir, Sir, my selection will happen, will it not? He assured me that you will definitely be selected. Bharat Arun was also the coach of RCB.
I expected RCB to buy in the auction: Siraj
Siraj further told in the podcast about the auction, “My name did not come till lunch on the day of the auction. I called Bharat Arun sir in panic that sir my name has not come yet. He assured me that the name would definitely come. I was feeling a lot of pressure, so I left my house and went to a friend’s place. The name came half an hour after lunch. But, for 10 seconds no team bid to buy. My heart started sinking. Then suddenly RCB lifted the paddle. I was relieved that the team I wanted to go to, put a bid on me.
‘Elder brother told that not RCB, Hyderabad bought it’
This fast bowler further said, “It was the biggest pleasure for me to be selected in the IPL auction. Immediately after this, I left my friend’s house for my place. I had just reached inside the house that brother told me that I have been bought for 2.6 crores. I remember repeatedly saying that RCB bought it. While elder brother told me that Sunrisers Hyderabad bought me, not RCB. Even today I do not think much about money. It was necessary for me to be selected in IPL.
Once upon a time Mohammad Siraj used to earn 500 rupees through cricket matches. But, the IPL auction held in 2017 changed the life of this player completely and the bowler who used to earn Rs 500 from a match became a millionaire in a jiffy. However, in the next season, he was bought by RCB for 2.20 crores. Since then he is with this team.
