New Delhi. Remember the first auction of IPL! Year 2008. For the first time in the country, cricketers were going to be auctioned. From players to cricket fans… some were confused and some were angry. After all, how can anyone bid on the players. How can players be sold? But the BCCI had moved ahead under the leadership of Lalit Modi. First the franchises of 8 cities were sold and then it was the turn of the players. Out of 8, 5 teams selected one marquee player each. These marquee players became Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh. It was a kind of respect for the players in a way. For this reason, the name of captain MS Dhoni with ‘Midas touch’ was missing in this list. Cricket fans were surprised why this happened.
There was a special reason for Mahendra Singh Dhoni not becoming the marquee player. Dhoni, the captain who won the World Cup to India, disclosed this. Dhoni told that he was asked whether he would like to become the marquee player of any team. He did not get much time to take this decision. He decided in a short time not to become a marquee player. Have to enter the bid.
MS Dhoni says in a show of Star Sports, ‘I had a chance to become the marquee player of two-three teams. But I decided that it would be better to enter the players’ bid. I was hoping that at least 1 million (dollars) could be obtained by entering the bid. Dhoni’s bet paid off and he managed to become the costliest player of IPL 2008.
In the IPL 2008 auction, Chennai Super Kings bid for MS Dhoni for $1.50 million. In the beginning, many teams placed bets on Dhoni, but as the prices started rising, the teams started backing out. In the end, there was a contest between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians went up to $1.40 million. But when CSK made a bid of 1.50 million, the Mumbai franchise also backed out. The amount Dhoni got was more than any player in IPL 2008.
In this way, MS Dhoni became the most expensive player of IPL because of one of his decisions. If he had become a marquee player like Dhoni, Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvraj, he would have become the costliest player of his team, but it was not necessary that he would have been the costliest player of the entire league. The rest happened with 5 marquee players. For example, Sachin became the most expensive player of Mumbai Indians with $1.121 million, but was left behind by MS Dhoni. Let us tell you that one thing was certain about the marquee player that the marquee player will get 15 percent more amount than the player on whom his franchise will bid the most.
CSK officials present in the table of IPL auction 2008 say that they knew that the teams which have selected the marquee player, they will not be able to put a lot of money on Dhoni. That’s why even though Mumbai kept bidding for a long time, they were not much worried. Anyway, CSK had decided that at least $ 1.80 million has to be spent on Dhoni.
