Abu Dhabi. The Scotland cricket team lost to Namibia by 4 wickets in the Super-12 leg of the T20 World Cup on Wednesday. After the defeat, Scotland’s stand-in captain Richie Berrington admitted that his batsmen did not perform as expected. Berrington said that the team scored 20-30 runs short, which became a major reason for the defeat. Scotland could only manage 109 for 8 in front of the sharp bowling of pacer Ruben Trumpelman (3 for 17) and Jane Frylink (2 for 10).
In reply, Namibia registered a victory at 115 for 6 with five balls to spare thanks to the innings of JJ Smit (32 not out in 23 balls, two sixes and two fours) and opener Craig Williams (23). Berrington said after the match, ‘It was a disappointing day for us, we scored about 20-30 runs short and it was very difficult to recover after the first few overs. The credit goes to Namibia for bowling so well in the beginning itself.
Scotland had lost 3 wickets in the first over of Trumplman. Berrington said he needed a partnership but it didn’t happen. “At that time (after losing early wickets), we just needed a good partnership. Matthew Cross played well but unfortunately didn’t play any big innings. Berrington said he would have to wait for regular captain Kyle Coetzer to determine the extent of the injury. Coetzer did not play against Namibia due to a finger injury.
Namibian captain Gerhard Erasmus said he was delighted to register another World Cup win. He said, ‘It is a pleasure to register another win in the World Cup. Coming from the first round, we were emotional and we managed to put up another good performance. We will go into other matches with good momentum and energy. Gerhard praised Trumpelman for taking three wickets in the very first over. He said, ‘Reuben has set top standards for himself, before that he was not able to perform as expected. But today he did it and he started well for us.
Player of the match Trumpman expressed the hope that he would be able to win a few more matches. He said, ‘Good result and hope that we will win some more matches. Luckily today was a good day for me. The victory belongs to the team and it is a big deal for us.
